Russian Troops Set to Withdrawn
Duration: 1:23
ANCHOR: And unrest continues in Russia. Thousands of ethnic Georgians flee South Ossetia to the Georgian capital to register their names in order to receive aid. STORY: Russian troops were set to pull back on their positions in Georgia today. On Sunday, Russia Major-General Vyacheslav Borisov said troops were already on the move. [Vyacheslav Borisov, Russian Major-General]: "Stay here and wait and you will then hear some sensational news: peacekeeping battalions are moving in to replace us here, with badges on their sleeves. These are the peacekeepers who have been here for 12 years. They will replace the troops step-by-step and troops will be withdrawing." But there are few expectations Russian will yield its hold on South Ossetia. Meanwhile, in Georgia tens of thousands of displaced people are seeking help from the government. South Ossetians, who fled the region to come to the Georgian capital, will receive aid from both the Georgian government and humanitarian organizations. But as thousands sought aid in the capital, less than 30 miles away, Russian forces remained in position near the town of Igoeti. The U.S., is concerned about the implications of the Russian invasion for the security of Western fuel supplies from the Caspian. And they will be looking primarily for signs of a withdrawal of Russian troops from the Georgian heartland.
