Smallest House
Duration: 1:17
STORY: It has just one room upstairs and one room down but this unusual round cottage in the English town of Rayleigh is a real gem. It was built in the 1740's and was given to the local council in trust decades ago. Fay Laflin has just become its new tenant. [Fay Laflin, Tenent] : "Oh it's really wonderful, absolutely amazing. I'm still pinching myself because I can't believe I live here." It's not the easiest house to live in and Fay is pleased she's quite small. [Fay Laflin, Tenent] : "I have to be very particular about the choice of furniture and actually a local company made my bed for me. It's a wooden framed bed but they've made it to the proportions of the cottage" Every week Fay invites tourists into her home. She has to - being curator of this museum home is part of the tenancy agreement. [Fay Laflin, Tenent] : "It's really lovely to know that I'm sharing a piece of local history with members of the public and making it accessible to them. It puts me right at the heart of the local community." The tourists come from all over the world and with only two rooms the visitors are allowed everywhere. That means on Wednesdays at least a few domestic chores are a must.
